S01E03 Psychotherapist Farhat Gupta Emphasises on The Importance of Mental Health Awareness

Updated: Dec 10, 2020

According to the World Health Organisation, mental health disorders affect one in four people. (1) These disorders can be anything from obsessive-compulsive disorders to anxiety, bipolar disorder to clinical depression. Currently, approximately 450 million people are going through mental illness globally which places mental disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability. (1) Another study reported that in 2017, 792 million people lived with a mental health disorder. (2)

Mental health disorders are complex and can take many forms. In the third episode of It’s Kritikal! Our guest Farhat Gupta talks about the importance of mental health and how it impacts our mind, body, and soul. Farhat is a Psychotherapist who is based out of Mumbai, India.

During our discussion, Farhat spoke about the following:

  1. The Importance of Support System: most of us NEED a SUPPORT SYSTEM! Here's an article explaining how and why you can turn to your social support (having a network of family and friends) in times of need. (3)

  2. The Difference Between Anxiety and Depression: here’s a detailed article that will make you look at the difference and overlapping points between anxiety and depression objectively. (4)

  3. Normalising The Conversation Around Mental Health: Seeking therapy or other mental health help is often looked upon in a negative light. Farhat talks about the importance of normalising the conversation around mental health and how parents play a big role here when it comes to the mental health of children.

  4. Psychotherapy: According to psychiatry.org, Psychotherapy, or talk-therapy, helps people to cope up with mental and emotional difficulties. Psychotherapy helps people in identifying, eliminating, and/or controlling troubling symptoms. Farhat goes into the details of defining therapy and the difference between therapy and counseling.

  5. Making Mental Health Part of Our Education Curriculum: Farhat argues that the biggest change in mindset or the society regarding mental health will come when the subject is made a crucial part of our curriculum. We often read about physical health in school but it is time that the focus is given on the entirety of a human’s life, of which mental health is a ‘kritikal’ element.
